Women who smoke during pregnancy ‘may be more likely to have a child with Asperger’s syndrome’

Women who smoke during pregnancy could be more likely to have a child with high-functioning autism, say researchers.

‘It has long been known that autism is an umbrella term for a wide range of disorders that impair social and communication skills,’ said lead author Professor Amy Kalkbrenner from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

‘What we are seeing is that some disorders on the autism spectrum, more than others, may be influenced by a factor such as whether a mother smokes during pregnancy.’

How to Deal With Autism in a Classroom

Not every student in a classroom can be taught in the same way. Some students have special needs that the teacher needs to address.There is a growing number of students who have autism. Autism is a brain disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate, socialize and maintain normal relationships with other people. It is part of a group of disorders known as the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The effects of autism range from person to person. Some of the symptoms include communication difficulties, resisting change, or appearing detached or withdrawn in social situations. The intellectual abilities of someone with autism also range. Some people with autism can be highly intelligent, but might be awkward in social situations. Many students with autism are taught in a traditional classroom. Therefore, a teacher needs to know how to deal with a student in the classroom who has autism.

Jakarta, Wanita yang merokok selama kehamilan cenderung melahirkan bayi yang menderita salah satu jenis autisme yaitu gangguan Asperger.

“Autisme adalah istilah umum untuk beberapa jenis gangguan yang merusak kemampuan sosial dan komunikasi,” ungkap Amy Kalkbrenner, asisten profesor di University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health dan ketua tim peneliti.

“Apa yang kami lihat adalah beberapa gangguan pada spektrum autisme bisa jadi dipengaruhi oleh faktor seperti apakah seorang ibu merokok selama kehamilan.”
